While there have been many fine books written about William Morris & his work, with many more undoubtedly to come, this is definitely THE biography of the man. In Fiona McCarthy he has found an intelligent, sensitive biographer who clearly admires & respects the man, but not to such a degree that she loses her objectivity & analytical by:   A socialist masterpiece, News From Nowhere is a vision of a future free from capitalism, isolation and industrialisation.

This volume also contains a wide selection of Morris's writings, lectures, journalism and letters, which expand upon the key themes of News From Nowhere.

William Morris, the leader of the British Arts and Crafts movement, was a man of tremendous energies, his accomplishments astonishing in their range and depth. He became successively a poet. William Morris. William Morris (24 March – 3 October ) was a revolutionary force in Victorian Britain: his work as an artist, designer, craftsman, writer and socialist dramatically changed the fashions and ideologies of the era.

His review is of great interest both for its discussion of Morris's poems in the context of Romanticism, and for its expression of Pater's own preoccupations. The final section of the review is better known in its later use as the 'Conclusion' to The Renaissance ()--withdrawn from the second edition as likely to mislead the young, but later.

the essence of his book, is William Morris: Aspects of the man and his work book essence also of the struggle in which we are engaged.

Though doubtless it was the pressure of circumstances in his own days that made More what he was, yet that pressure forced him to give us, not a vision of the triumph of the new-born capitalistic society, the element in which lived the new. Morris designed foliate patterns for the pages, whilst Burne-Jones lent his decorative skills to the illustrated panels.

The two then collaborated on the overall format and design of the book, while the artist and engraver William Harcourt Hooper etched the pages for printing. Less than copies were made, each costly to produce and buy. Morris's interest in the technical aspects of weaving increased, and some of his final designs attempted to reproduce complex historical structures, such as the sumptuous brocaded Flemish velvets of the 15th and 16th centuries – in 'Granada', a design offor example.

Morris's last identifiable designs for woven textiles were drawn in. One of Morris's completed manuscripts was A Book of Verse (), a book made for Morris's close friend Georgiana Burne-Jones.

In line with Morris's politics of fellowship, the book was a collaborative effort, with poems and calligraphy by Morris and figurative decoration by Edward Burne-Jones.

William Morris (24 March – 3 October ) was a British textile designer, poet, novelist, translator, and socialist activist associated with the British Arts and Crafts was a major contributor to the revival of traditional British textile arts and methods of production.

His literary contributions helped to establish the modern fantasy genre, while he helped win acceptance.

While not a complete study of his personal and professional life, this book will be a solid addition to anyone's library.

Beautifully illustrated and well-researched, this volume places Morris' work in historical and aesthetic context. I saw images unseen s: William Morris was born in in Walthamstow, Essex, the third of nine children.

William's father, after whom he was named, was a self-made business man, who was able to provide an upper-middle-class lifestyle for his family because of a shrewd investment in a Devonshire mine.

Drawing upon The Huntington's superb holdings of the largest collection of Morris material in North America, this book examines the life and work of the designer and of Morris & Company.

It contains detailed studies of Morris's stained glass, interior decoration designs, and book publishing ventures, as well as an essay on his successor at Morris & Company, J. Dearle.5/5(6). William Morris was born in into a well-off family. His father was a financier in the City of London and they lived in a large house near Walthamstow in Essex.

His father died young (Morris was only 13) and it turned out he had been involved in a range of highly speculative – and only just legal – ventures. Probably the best book on William Morris I've ever read. The book is broken down into different sections detailing his work in different areas.

This man did the job of twenty, so it makes sense that a book about him would have to be organized this way. The book details his work as a conservationist, political activist, and business owner, as well as the more commonly discussed areas of textile / wallpaper pattern /5.

Morris was a man of incredible depth and breadth of talent. His creativity and industry are aspirational for today's citizens. "How We Might Live: The Vision of William Morris" seeks to instruct viewers on the rich life of William Morris and to showcase the University of Maryland Libraries' William Morris.

Education and early career. Morris was born in an Essex village on the southern edge of Epping Forest, a member of a large and well-to-do his preparatory school, he went at age 13 to Marlborough College.A schoolfellow described him at this time as “a thick-set, strong-looking boy, with a high colour and black curly hair, good-natured and kind, but with a fearful temper.”.

My library. His house became a pattern book of the work of late 19 th century masters, including William Morris, perfectly crafted and painted with care.

InDavid Parr inscribed ‘If you do anything, do it well’ in his house, and his patterned, hand-painted walls are a testament to that maxim and to the values of the Arts & Crafts movement in general.T he creative approach that William Morris employed in his designs was revealed in a lecture from 'first, diligent study of Nature and secondly, study of the work of the ages of Art'.

Morris felt that the 'diligent study of Nature' was important, as nature was the perfect example of God's design. He saw this as the spiritual antidote to the decline in social, moral and artistic.
